Carlos Piñana Conesa, (born in Cartagena, 1976) belongs to a family of deep flamenco tradition. Grandson of the patriarch of the cantes mineros (a variety or cante jondo or hondo, which is a type of Andalusian folk music), Antonio Piñana (Father) and son of the Guitarist Antonio Piñana (son), Carlos has lived and learned flamenco since his childhood. His own father was his first teacher, contributing from the beginning to develop his feature as a Guitarist.
In 1990 he began his classical guitar studies in the Cartagena Music Conservatory and simultaneously got into the mysteries of the Flamenco Guitar World, in which he rapidly started to stand out. He obtained several awards on his professional trajectory. As an example of this we can mention the First Prize and Bordon Minero in 1996 at the International Festival of the Cantes Mineros. In 1998 he was awarded with the National Prize of Concert Guitar “Ramon Montoya” in the Cordoba Art Flamenco Festival and the same year he got the First Prize “Sabicas” in Calasparra’s National Festival of Young Flamencos and the prize “Importante 98” awarded by the “La Opinión de Murcia” Newspaper. In 2001 the Emma Egea Foundation gave him the “Alumbre 2001” Prize, in recognition to his dedication and labor.
In 1998 he finished his academic studies as a classical guitarist and obtained the Superior Guitar Title in Murcia’s Superior Conservatory.
As the Flamenco specialist Manuel Ríos Ruiz stated “he should be recognized as an accomplished flamenco musician, with an outstanding sense of the rhythm structures for the composition and an amazing interpretative virtuosity”. The Flamenco musician Agustín Gómez, said about his performing, “His expressive delicacy is an excellent alternative to the musical roughness of today”.
He has performed in New York, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Hanover, Stockholm, Dublin, Lausanne, Naples, Caserta, Milan, Hamman, Teheran, El Cairo, Alexandria, Tokyo, Fez, Casablanca, Mexico, Oxford, Lisbon, Porto, Tunes … as well as other several Spanish cities including Murcia, Bilbao, Madrid, Jerez, Seville, Avila, Saragossa, Barcelona, etc.
He has played with artists such as: Yungchen Lhamo (Tibet), Fathy Salama (Egypt), Estrella Morente, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Carles Benavent, Javier la Torre, Jorge Pardo, Naseer Shamma (Iraq), Miles Jay (U.S.A.), the Andalusia Orchestra from Fez (Morocco), the Symphonic Orchestra from Murcia, the Philharmonic Orchestra from Dublin, Said Chaibri (Morocco), Francoise Altan (Morocco), Aicha Redouane (Morocco), Amr Diab (Egypt), Ross Daly (Ireland), Ashraf Khan (Pakistan), Aytac Dogan (Turkey), Tommy Smith (Great Britain) among others …
He has released five records: “El Cuidado de una esencia” (1996) a profound tribute to the person of his grandfather, “Cal-libri” (1999), “PaloSanto (2001), “Mundos Flamencos” (2003) and “Misa Flamenca” (2007). He has composed the soundtrack of the movie “Naked” from Director Juan Manuel Chumilla. In the year 2002 he staged for the first time with the Symphonic Orchestra from Murcia his play for guitar and orchestra “Esencia”.
Nowadays he alternates his original activity with teaching at Murcia’s Superior Conservatory of Music in the Flamenco Guitar Department, being as well co-director of Murcia’s International Festival of Guitar and coordinating the International Competition of Flamenco Guitar “Niño Ricardo” in Murcia.
